Webinars

Using webconferencing software to create a dynamic pedagogical tool

Quality

The interactive features of webinars (online seminars) can transform online training into an interactive experience that mimics a classroom experience, but with a reach that stretches around the world. A webinar is an online meeting, which occurs at a set time and date, and which can be open or by invitation only. Presenters can share slideshows, stream video, and engage with participants through live text chat, set up polls, invite participants to discuss themes and take notes on a shared whiteboard, upload documents that support the lecture or discussion, and record the entire meeting to share with those who could not make it. ITC-ILO currently uses WebEx webconferencing software.

Relevance

Webinars have been taking off at the Center and have gradually become part of the blended learning approach. As well as containing course content, webinars can be used before or after training events, to connect with participants, either to prepare them better for the course or to follow up and debrief.

ITC-ILO has also designed and is currently delivering a tailor-made “How to set up engaging webinar series” for interested groups and institutions.

Impact

When 30 ILO colleagues from all over the world attended e.g. the EU Funding Workshop in Brussels and Turin, they already knew what was ahead, thanks to an introductory webinar that helped to manage the complexity of the course, and the multiple expectations it had generated.

The webinar, held several days prior to the workshop, explored the entire programme, provided time to discuss expectations, and gave the participants specific instructions on how they could best prepare beforehand. People arrived on location already informed, with appropriate expectations, and a feel for group dynamics. The workshop dived directly into the core of the material and ensured that the time spent together made the most effective use of people’s time and expertise.
