Learning through social togetherness

The International Labour Migration Academy Facebook page

Quality

Social media tools provide the ideal arena for people to extend learning beyond the boundaries of a classroom. The International Labour Migration Academy has over 200 active members on its Facebook page (see link below). The page connects the different participants all over the work and allows them to continue sharing their thoughts and knowledge about the topic even when the academy is finished. Facebook is a simple and free way to connect large groups of people into a network, with built-in features for sharing messages, images, links and so on. One of the key features of Facebook is the way it records and tracks information, preserving the knowledge collected by the group into an online archive and resource on labour migration.

Relevance

The International Labour Migration Academy Facebook group was created in 2010, to allow sharing among participants, organisers and others. It also serves as a key networking tool.

The group involves some of the key experts in the field of labour migration. Group members have the opportunity to interact with these experts, and to develop concepts and ideas which ultimately can be applied in practice in the area of labour migration management.

Impact

The Facebook group is part of a new way of learning which was developed and is being refined by ITC-ILO as part of the blended learning approach. It has so far proven to be a successful good practice in building the capacity of participants.

The international background of the group members also means there is an opportunity for them to share experience from their regions, as well as pertinent news articles and information. This, in turn, stimulates constructive debate and helps develop and examine interesting new perspectives.
