Insights from the field

Collecting testimonials on-the-go

Quality

A lot of the best learning insights don’t happen in lessons - they happen in the field, leaving the people involved thinking “I have to remember that story to tell.” That’s why when we train in the field we usually take a mobile video-recorder with us (a Flipcam). Flipcams are very handy, lightweight devices that can be used to record interviews, testimonials, expert inputs, and those unanticipated moments that just happen. Once captured on video, the lessons and insights contained are ready to share, in a myriad of ways.

Relevance

Short videos, containing field experiences and insights, can be quickly uploaded onto YouTube, where they can be easily viewed by others, just by sharing the link. In this form, they can also be easily utilised for e-learning, workshops, integrated into presentations and online course materials, and linked to from blog posts and wikis, becoming versatile online training materials. In this way we gather knowledge from where it lies around the globe, and make it accessible and learnable in our training toolkits.

Impact

In Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, the entrepreneurship course Start and Improve Your Business (SIYB) gave people valuable information on how to make make their entrepreneurship training also accessible online. Using flipcams, we took video testimonials of the trainers, speaking about the benefits of the online community of practice and the e-learning platform.

These videos are now online, making information about the course and its benefits available to a much wider audience than just the original participants. In the same way, videos of courses and seminars can transform information offered to a limited, face-to-face audience into valuable e-learning content available to anyone with access to the internet.
