Articulate learning modules
Self-directed learning in mobile contexts
Quality
ITC-ILO has been using Articulate e-learning software for the last year, to create engaging, interactive training courses for participants.
The software can be used to create modules on a particular subject or to present a subject in a workshop or course. These are installed on a USB key or CD and given to participants, to complete in their own timeframe, or built into online courses.
ITC-ILO has published educational modules for online courses in 30 different languages, including Hindi and Arabic.
Relevance
Articulate promotes self-directed learning, through interactive features which allow students to make their way through a learning module in their own time, either as a complete unit, on in conjunction with face-to-face learning. Modules can be accessed online, which means that participants can also view them from mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers.
The module is similar to a slideshow presentation, which a student can study from a location of their choice. By clicking on tabs, points, or bullets, participants can see more information and summaries, or links to download background documents.
Other features include interactive tests of the learning presented so far, discussion forums, and an end of module test and certificate.

Impact
With the ability to animate annotations to highlight important points, add and embed images, videos, and web links, and a sophisticated multi-level navigation structure, Articulate presentations are more comparable to a website than to a PowerPoint presentation.
Participants’ self-directed learning is empowered with ability to immediately gauge their own understanding of concepts, test existing knowledge, and discover further information, as they make their way through the learning module.
The modules themselves are highly mobile – participants can access them online via the device of their choice, or take away USB keys or CDs with the module on them, allowing them to learn when and where they prefer.
